Study the Word

Psalm 74 in Hebrew and English, and the words as they are sung.

A contemplation by Asaph.

1

God, why have you rejected us forever? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?

מַשְׂכִּ֗יל לְאָ֫סָ֥ף לָמָ֣ה אֱ֭לֹהִים זָנַ֣חְתָּ לָנֶ֑צַח יֶעְשַׁ֥ן אַ֝פְּךָ֗ בְּצֹ֣אן מַרְעִיתֶֽךָ׃

2

Remember your congregation, which you purchased of old, which you have redeemed to be the tribe of your inheritance: Mount Zion, in which you have lived.

זְכֹ֤ר עֲדָתְךָ֨ ׀ קָ֘נִ֤יתָ קֶּ֗דֶם גָּ֭אַלְתָּ שֵׁ֣בֶט נַחֲלָתֶ֑ךָ הַר־צִ֝יּ֗וֹן זֶ֤ה ׀ שָׁכַ֬נְתָּ בּֽוֹ׃

3

Lift up your feet to the perpetual ruins, all the evil that the enemy has done in the sanctuary.

הָרִ֣ימָה פְ֭עָמֶיךָ לְמַשֻּׁא֣וֹת נֶ֑צַח כָּל־הֵרַ֖ע אוֹיֵ֣ב בַּקֹּֽדֶשׁ׃

4

Your adversaries have roared in the middle of your assembly. They have set up their standards as signs.

שָׁאֲג֣וּ צֹ֭רְרֶיךָ בְּקֶ֣רֶב מוֹעֲדֶ֑ךָ שָׂ֖מוּ אוֹתֹתָ֣ם אֹתֽוֹת׃

5

They behaved like men wielding axes, cutting through a thicket of trees.

יִ֭וָּדַע כְּמֵבִ֣יא לְמָ֑עְלָה בִּֽסֲבָךְ־עֵ֝֗ץ קַרְדֻּמּֽוֹת׃

6

Now they break all its carved work down with hatchet and hammers.

ועת פִּתּוּחֶ֣יהָ יָּ֑חַד בְּכַשִּׁ֥יל וְ֝כֵֽילַפֹּ֗ת יַהֲלֹמֽוּן׃

7

They have burned your sanctuary to the ground. They have profaned the dwelling place of your Name.

שִׁלְח֣וּ בָ֭אֵשׁ מִקְדָּשֶׁ֑ךָ לָ֝אָ֗רֶץ חִלְּל֥וּ מִֽשְׁכַּן־שְׁמֶֽךָ׃

8

They said in their heart, “We will crush them completely.” They have burned up all the places in the land where God was worshiped.

אָמְר֣וּ בְ֭לִבָּם נִינָ֣ם יָ֑חַד שָׂרְפ֖וּ כָל־מוֹעֲדֵי־אֵ֣ל בָּאָֽרֶץ׃

9

We see no miraculous signs. There is no longer any prophet, neither is there among us anyone who knows how long.

אֽוֹתֹתֵ֗ינוּ לֹ֥א רָ֫אִ֥ינוּ אֵֽין־ע֥וֹד נָבִ֑יא וְלֹֽא־אִ֝תָּ֗נוּ יֹדֵ֥עַ עַד־מָֽה׃

10

How long, God, shall the adversary reproach? Shall the enemy blaspheme your name forever?

עַד־מָתַ֣י אֱ֭לֹהִים יְחָ֣רֶף צָ֑ר יְנָ֘אֵ֤ץ אוֹיֵ֖ב שִׁמְךָ֣ לָנֶֽצַח׃

11

Why do you draw back your hand, even your right hand? Take it from your chest and consume them!

לָ֤מָּה תָשִׁ֣יב יָ֭דְךָ וִֽימִינֶ֑ךָ מִקֶּ֖רֶב חוקך כַלֵּֽה׃

12

Yet God is my King of old, working salvation throughout the earth.

וֵ֭אלֹהִים מַלְכִּ֣י מִקֶּ֑דֶם פֹּעֵ֥ל יְ֝שׁוּע֗וֹת בְּקֶ֣רֶב הָאָֽרֶץ׃

13

You divided the sea by your strength. You broke the heads of the sea monsters in the waters.

אַתָּ֤ה פוֹרַ֣רְתָּ בְעָזְּךָ֣ יָ֑ם שִׁבַּ֖רְתָּ רָאשֵׁ֥י תַ֝נִּינִ֗ים עַל־הַמָּֽיִם׃

14

You broke the heads of Leviathan in pieces. You gave him as food to people and desert creatures.

אַתָּ֣ה רִ֭צַּצְתָּ רָאשֵׁ֣י לִוְיָתָ֑ן תִּתְּנֶ֥נּוּ מַ֝אֲכָ֗ל לְעָ֣ם לְצִיִּֽים׃

15

You opened up spring and stream. You dried up mighty rivers.

אַתָּ֣ה בָ֭קַעְתָּ מַעְיָ֣ן וָנָ֑חַל אַתָּ֥ה ה֝וֹבַ֗שְׁתָּ נַהֲר֥וֹת אֵיתָֽן׃

16

The day is yours, the night is also yours. You have prepared the light and the sun.

לְךָ֣ י֭וֹם אַף־לְךָ֥ לָ֑יְלָה אַתָּ֥ה הֲ֝כִינ֗וֹתָ מָא֥וֹר וָשָֽׁמֶשׁ׃

17

You have set all the boundaries of the earth. You have made summer and winter.

אַתָּ֣ה הִ֭צַּבְתָּ כָּל־גְּבוּל֣וֹת אָ֑רֶץ קַ֥יִץ וָ֝חֹ֗רֶף אַתָּ֥ה יְצַרְתָּם׃

18

Remember this, that the enemy has mocked you, Yahweh. Foolish people have blasphemed your name.

זְכָר־זֹ֗את א֭וֹיֵב חֵרֵ֣ף ׀ יְהוָ֑ה וְעַ֥ם נָ֝בָ֗ל נִֽאֲצ֥וּ שְׁמֶֽךָ׃

19

Don’t deliver the soul of your dove to wild beasts. Don’t forget the life of your poor forever.

אַל־תִּתֵּ֣ן לְ֭חַיַּת נֶ֣פֶשׁ תּוֹרֶ֑ךָ חַיַּ֥ת עֲ֝נִיֶּ֗יךָ אַל־תִּשְׁכַּ֥ח לָנֶֽצַח׃

20

Honor your covenant, for haunts of violence fill the dark places of the earth.

הַבֵּ֥ט לַבְּרִ֑ית כִּ֥י מָלְא֥וּ מַחֲשַׁכֵּי־אֶ֝֗רֶץ נְא֣וֹת חָמָֽס׃

21

Don’t let the oppressed return ashamed. Let the poor and needy praise your name.

אַל־יָשֹׁ֣ב דַּ֣ךְ נִכְלָ֑ם עָנִ֥י וְ֝אֶבְי֗וֹן יְֽהַלְל֥וּ שְׁמֶֽךָ׃

22

Arise, God! Plead your own cause. Remember how the foolish man mocks you all day.

קוּמָ֣ה אֱ֭לֹהִים רִיבָ֣ה רִיבֶ֑ךָ זְכֹ֥ר חֶרְפָּתְךָ֥ מִנִּי־נָ֝בָ֗ל כָּל־הַיּֽוֹם׃

23

Don’t forget the voice of your adversaries. The tumult of those who rise up against you ascends continually.

אַל־תִּ֭שְׁכַּח ק֣וֹל צֹרְרֶ֑יךָ שְׁא֥וֹן קָ֝מֶ֗יךָ עֹלֶ֥ה תָמִֽיד׃

Why, O God

Why have You cast us off

Forever

Why does Your anger burn

Against the sheep

Of Your pasture

Remember Your people

Purchased long ago

The tribe You redeemed

Mount Zion

Where You dwelt

Lift up Your steps

To the ruins

The enemy

Has destroyed the sanctuary

They roar in Your meeting place

They set their signs

Axes rise

Into the wood

Breaking, cutting

Carving it down

How long

How long, O God

Will the enemy mock Your name

How long

How long, O God

Will You hold back Your hand

They burned Your sanctuary

Cast it to the ground

They profaned

The dwelling of Your name

They said in their hearts

We will wipe them out together

They burned every

Appointed place of God

No signs remain

There is no prophet

No one with us

Knows how long

Why do You hold back

Your right hand

Draw it out

From Your garment

Bring it to an end

How long

How long, O God

Will the enemy mock Your name

How long

How long, O God

Will You rise and defend

Yet You are my King

From ancient days

Working salvation

In the earth

You split the sea

By Your strength

You broke the heads

Of the sea creatures

You crushed Leviathan

Gave him as food

For desert creatures

You opened springs

You dried the rivers

Yours is the day

Yours is the night

You fixed the light

And the sun

You set all boundaries

Of the earth

Summer and winter

You formed them

Remember this

The enemy mocks

A foolish people

Revile Your name

Do not give

The life of Your dove

To the beast

Do not forget

Your afflicted forever

Look on the covenant

Dark places of the earth

Are filled with violence

Rise, O God

Defend Your cause

Rise, O God

Defend Your cause

How long

How long, O God

Will the enemy mock Your name

How long

How long, O God

Rise and defend Your name

Rise and defend Your name

Do not forget

The voice of Your enemies

The noise of those

Who rise against You

Rises

Continually

Lyrics by Paul Whitehorn: a singable English rendering of the Hebrew, as sung on this recording.

Corpus Psalterium sets each psalm to music by its Hebrew grammar. Didactic psalms teach; Cantillated psalms are spoken, sung or performed before God. Hear all 150 psalms free.

About these songs. They are a summary and a commentary on the Psalms, not a word-for-word translation. Read what these songs are →

What These Songs Are, and What They Are Not

These songs are not a word-for-word translation of the Psalms. They were never meant to be. Nor do they try to capture every idea in every psalm. In a song, that would be impossible.

What we have done is capture the essence of each psalm: what matters most in it. Think of each song as a summary. Think of it as a cheat sheet. The purpose of the psalm is still being met. God's word to mankind is still being heard.

Behind many of these lines is word research: deep study of the meaning of the Hebrew. So where a line sounds different from your translation, and you think it is wrong, study it. We believe you will find that the essence of what we sing is true.

The truth is that no one can set the Psalms to music without also becoming a commentator. That is what this is. It is a modern commentary on the Psalms: not only the Psalms themselves, and not only the Psalms being sung. So do not think that every word of the psalm is here. It is not. Read the psalm itself, in full.

Why do this at all? Because we believe God intended humanity to be surrounded by His word. This was always the entertainment He wanted us to have: not hours of television, not a day lost in a phone looking at nonsense. The blessed man of Psalm 1 meditates on God's word day and night. How can we meditate on His word if we do not surround ourselves with it?

As ministers, our first responsibility is to share God's word with people. That is what these songs are for.
