Heb 1

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David.

1Heb 2

Deliver me, Yahweh, from evil men. Preserve me from violent men:

2Heb 3

those who devise mischief in their hearts. They continually gather themselves together for war.

3Heb 4

They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent. Viper’s poison is under their lips. Selah.

4Heb 5

Yahweh, keep me from the hands of the wicked. Preserve me from the violent men who have determined to trip my feet.

5Heb 6

The proud have hidden a snare for me, they have spread the cords of a net by the path. They have set traps for me. Selah.

6Heb 7

I said to Yahweh, “You are my God.” Listen to the cry of my petitions, Yahweh.

7Heb 8

Yahweh, the Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle.

8Heb 9

Yahweh, don’t grant the desires of the wicked. Don’t let their evil plans succeed, or they will become proud. Selah.

9Heb 10

As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

10Heb 11

Let burning coals fall on them. Let them be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, from where they never rise.

11Heb 12

An evil speaker won’t be established on the earth. Evil will hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

12Heb 13

I know that Yahweh will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and justice for the needy.

13Heb 14

Surely the righteous will give thanks to your name. The upright will dwell in your presence.

Get me loose, LORD

from the cruel one

keep me

keep me from the man with blood on his hands

every day he's stirring up a fight

his words come hissing, quick and thin

there's venom waiting behind his smile

Hold on to me, LORD

when the crooked reach for me

keep me

keep me from the man with blood on his hands

they want to knock my feet away

they dug a hole and covered it

they strung a line across my path

and hid their hooks along the way

I told the LORD

You're the one I belong to

LORD, lean in and hear me plead

Lord, You're the strength that saves me

when the arrows flew

You were the helmet on my head

LORD, don't hand the crooked what they crave

don't let the scheme work out

or they'll stand up proud

Let the harm their mouths have stirred

land back on their own heads

let hot embers rain on them

let them drop into the flood

and never rise again

a liar won't keep his ground

and harm will chase the cruel man down

I'm sure of this

the LORD takes the side of the poor

He sets it right for the ones with nothing

You're the one I belong to

the good will praise Your name

the honest will stay

close to You

About these songs. They are a summary and a commentary on the Psalms, not a word-for-word translation. Read what these songs are →

What These Songs Are, and What They Are Not

These songs are not a word-for-word translation of the Psalms. They were never meant to be. Nor do they try to capture every idea in every psalm. In a song, that would be impossible.

What we have done is capture the essence of each psalm: what matters most in it. Think of each song as a summary. Think of it as a cheat sheet. The purpose of the psalm is still being met. God's word to mankind is still being heard.

Behind many of these lines is word research: deep study of the meaning of the Hebrew. So where a line sounds different from your translation, and you think it is wrong, study it. We believe you will find that the essence of what we sing is true.

The truth is that no one can set the Psalms to music without also becoming a commentator. That is what this is. It is a modern commentary on the Psalms: not only the Psalms themselves, and not only the Psalms being sung. So do not think that every word of the psalm is here. It is not. Read the psalm itself, in full.

Why do this at all? Because we believe God intended humanity to be surrounded by His word. This was always the entertainment He wanted us to have: not hours of television, not a day lost in a phone looking at nonsense. The blessed man of Psalm 1 meditates on God's word day and night. How can we meditate on His word if we do not surround ourselves with it?

As ministers, our first responsibility is to share God's word with people. That is what these songs are for.
